New Movies From Fantasia Film Festival 2018 That You Should Know About

Fantasia Film Festival 2018

It’s our favourite time of year again! Fantasia Film Festival is back with another superb line-up. We have picked a few films that so good, just so you get a taste of what’s to come.

Fantasia Film Festival 2018

Fantasia Festival is almost upon us again. It is a festival that features some of the best genre films, introducing new and emerging talent as well as some visionary directors showcasing their new feature-films.

I understand that there are many more films playing this year’s Fantasia Film Festival that won’t get a mention in this article. However, fear not, Moviehooker will be covering Fantasia, so expect a hell of a lot of reviews.

MANDY

Fantasia Film Festival 2018

This has got a mention here on Moviehooker before. Mandy is the new Nicolas Cage film and it sounds absolutely bonkers. Cage plays a husband that loses his wife when she is brutally murdered by a satanic cult. Instead of Cage going to the authorities, he takes matters into his own hands, grabs chainsaws and a giant shiny axe and proceeds to deliver his own form of justice.

AN OBITUARY

Fantasia Festival 2018

Another amazing aspect of Fantasia Festival is that it shows a lot of upcoming releases from South Korea. If you’re a regular reader on Moviehooker, then you will know that South Korean cinema is something we thrive on, especially films of a darker nature.

BIG BROTHER

Fantasia Festival 2018

It is unfortunate that some people these days will only recognise Donnie Yen for his role in the new Star Wars movies. The man has been on the top of the list of Asian action stars for over a decade.

Big Brother reunites Donnie Yen with director Kenji Tanigaki (GOD OF WAR, Fantasia 2017) so expect some serious bone-crunching, beautifully choreographed, gratuitous violence.

ARIZONA

Arizona stars Danny McBride and it looks like we could have a great dark comedy to look forward to. The reviews have been positive and they also state that Arizona is deliciously dark.

McBride plays a guy called Sonny. I am not 100% but I think that Sonny is a serial killer. Well, either that or people just die horrible deaths when they are around him.

I think McBride suits this role, it’s great t see him choose a darker path. He is also one of the writers for the new Halloween movie.

 1987: WHEN THE DAY COMES

Fantasia Festival 2018

This is a new South Korean drama based on true events that lead to South Korea’s democracy back in 1987. Not only is this a drama based on true events but it also spirals into a dark thriller.

If you have seen the wonderful South Korean drama, A Taxi Driver then I am sure you will find a lot to love about 1987: When The Day Comes. The movie has been described as a logical follow-up to A Taxi Driver, which received a well-deserved standing ovation at last year’s Fantasia Film Festival.

Directed by Joon-Hwan Jang who also gave us the fantastic Hwayi: A Monster Boy

BLACK TIDE

Fantasia Festival 2018

Fantasia Film Festival 2018

A new thriller starring the great Vincent Cassel (La Haine, Irreversible)and Roman Duris (The Beat My Heart Skipped). Cassel plays a hard-drinking cop with an alcohol dependency. His life starts to crumble before him when he is thrown into a case of a missing boy, the same age as his own son.

I watched the trailer and it looks like Cassel is in top form. I forgot how much I missed that guy on-screen.

TERRIFIED

Fantasia Festival 2018

Just this image alone is enough to send chills down your spine. Imagine walking from your slumber and there is a big naked guy standing right in front of you, staring at you with his loving eyes.

I have managed to read a few reviews and it looks like we’re about to get a solid entry into the horror genre. Great to see Brazil dish out the horror movies. This is the second Brazilian film to be featured in this article.

The storyline seems like a straightforward one. It seems like a paranormal type movie with paranormal investigators investigating strange happenings in Bueno Aires.

LAPLACE’S WITCH

Fantasia Festival 2018

Fantasia Film Festival 2018

I really don’t know much about this film. The reason it goes on the list is that it is from visionary director Takeshi Miike. I have been a huge fan of that man’s work for as long as I can remember. Although I haven’t been overly impressed with his recent films, I still have nothing but respect for the man.

Laplace’s Witch is based on a Manga by Keigo Higashino. The film has been described as a mystery thriller, so don’t let the title mislead you into thinking it is a horror movie.

When two people are found dead from hydrogen sulphide poisoning, a team of scientists team up to determine if the deaths were murders

KASANE

Fantasia Festival 2018

Fantasia Film Festival 2018

Kasane is adapted from an ongoing Manga series written and illustrated by  Matsuura Daruma. The film follows a young woman called Fuchi Kasane. After her mother dies, Kasane is disowned by her father. She is constantly being called ugly and bullied for the way she looks.

Somehow Kasane finds herself in the possession of magical lipstick: if she kisses someone on the cheek when wearing this lipstick, she will gain their looks for 12-hours.

Kasane has been described as a psychological thriller. I think the way I described it does it no justice, I make it sound like a teen drama. I can certainly guarantee you that this is not the case.

THE MAN WHO KILLED HITLER AND THEN THE BIGFOOT

Fantasia Festival 2018

Fantasia Festival 2018

This just sounds all sorts crazy but in a really good way. The Man Who Killed Hitler And Then The Bigfoot is a bizarre story about a man who assassinated Hitler. He has spent the rest of his life furious that he can’t tell anyone that he was the man who killed Hitler. Then, years later he is contacted again and asked to go and kill the bigfoot.

Another reason to get excited about this film is that it stars Sam Elliott. I think this film is destined for greatness. Fantasia Festival will hold the world premiere. Hopefully, this one is on the screening library when we get access to it.

THE NIGHTSHIFTER

Fantasia Festival 2018

Fantasia Festival 2018

This Brazilan horror movie looks like it could satisfy the hardest of gorehounds. The film focuses on a man who works at a morgue and can communicate with the corpses. If you have a weak stomach then I would say you might want to give this one a miss.

I was sent the trailer for this film and it can be view by clicking HERE

That is all for this ist. Expect to hear more news as it is announced. As always, thanks so much for reading.
