(NEW YORK, NY — February 10, 2016) — FilmBuff has licensed worldwide distribution rights to Malik Bader’s acclaimed Detroit-set crime thriller CASH ONLY. The New York-based distribution company, whose titles include Banksy’s EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP and Benson+Moorhead’s SPRING, have set a Spring theatrical release for the film, and will release it on Video-on-Demand the same day. The film was produced by Ele Bardha of Bardha Productions and Nickola Shreli of Nickname Projects.

“FilmBuff prides itself on releasing powerful, boundary-pushing cinema, and is honoured to be sharing Malik Bader’s unique, brilliant film with U.S. audiences this spring,” says FilmBuff Content Coordinator Jake Hanly. “CASH ONLY showcases a bold new storytelling talent, and its dark vision of modern Detroit is not easily forgotten.”

Nickola Shreli (ABDUCTION), who also wrote the film’s screenplay, plays Elvis Martini, a struggling landlord at the end of his rope. Days away from losing his building to bank foreclosure, he can’t pay back thousands in cash borrowed from dangerous the Albanian underworld. His building is in shambles, and he’s stuck with a prostitute tenant months behind on rent and a paranoid marijuana grower who isn’t coughing up what he’s promised. His other tenants are just as bad, with promises to pay what they can when they can. The only bright light in Elvis’ dark world is his nine-year-old daughter Lena – the only person who can help him hold onto his sanity and look forward to his tomorrows.

Elvis’ already uneasy world is thrown into further chaos when he commits a crime of opportunity and his daughter is abducted. Elvis must confront his inner demons to find the cash needed to save his daughter only to find that a darker more dangerous fate lay ahead.

Lensed on location in the cold, dangerous trenches of Detroit, CASH ONLY World Premiered at the 2015 Fantasia Film Festival to great acclaim, and took home the festival’s Best Director Award. The Hollywood Reporter called it, “one of the more convincingly gritty indies to hit fests in several seasons” as TwitchFilm praised it for being “both sharp and vulnerable.”

Says Bader of the acquisition: “We’re very excited to be partnering with the team at FilmBuff for the release of CASH ONLY. We believe their distinct approach and insight into the genre and thriller market makes them the perfect partners to introduce our film to cinema audiences across America.”
