Here are some top foreign thrillers that might have managed to slip past you. I have some dark and gritty thrillers from Denmark, Spain, Philippines, Russia, and France.

I hope you enjoy.

KEEPER OF LOST CAUSES

Country: Denmark

Release: 2013

Based on a crime novel by Jussi Henry Adler-Olsen, The Keeper Of Lost Causes was adapted for the screen by Nikolaj Arcel, the screenwriter for the original, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. This gritty Danish thriller is directed by Mikkel Nørgaard, the director of Danish hit comedy Klown.

The first three films in this list act as sort of a trilogy. We have the same returning characters but just different cases.

We all know the calibre of writing that The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo had, it was a fantastic film. The Keeper Of Lost Causes has received solid reviews and just like The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, this film is dark and quite disturbing.

After getting shot in the line of duty, Detective Carl Mørck is transferred to Department Q, the department where all the cold cases lay. He teams up with his new assistant, Assad and re-opens an old 5-year-old-case about a missing woman.

Official Plot

Police inspector Carl Mørck is put in charge of a department of cold cases, joined only by his assistant, Assad. They dig into a case about a disappeared woman.

THE ABSENT ONE

Country: Denmark

Release: 2014

Jussi Henry Adler-Olsen seems to be the man with the brains behind a lot of the fantastic Danish noir movies getting released. Again, this film was adapted from one of his novels, and again we have the same talented scriptwriter and director to bring this to life for the big screen.

The second instalment that continues with the same cops from the first film, The Keeper Of Lost Causes. Although this movie is a new case, there is a lot of flashbacks, so it might be worth your while to check out the first film before you tackle this one.

Multiple reviews also state that this film is very graphic and not for the fainthearted

Official Plot

The murder of young twins initially implicates a group of upper-class students as the killers, though the case takes a turn or two from its starting point.

The last film in the Danish crime trilogy, A Conspiracy Of Faith reunites detective Carl Mørck and his assistant, Assad. The last instalment in the series focuses on crazy religious people, a demented serial killer – as well as looking into cases about abducted children and why their parents did not report them missing.

Official Plot

An old note is found in a bottle in Jutland which has travelled very long across the ocean a long time ago. The note is hard to decipher, but when the Danish investigator from Section Q receives it, the odd personalities within the section find a new angle on it and try to unveil yet another old and diabolic case even though the lead is cold.
