Netflix has picked up Spanish sci-fi, The Platform. It will be released on March 20th.
I really have no idea how to explain this, but I mean that in the best possible way. WTF? did I just watch? this new Netflix film looks full-on crazy, tense, claustrophobic and weirdly violent.
Imagine you’re sentenced to do some time in jail. Then when you arrive at the prison to serve your time, you realise that each level of the prison has only 1 cell. Each cubic cell has only 2 prisoners and feeding time is, well..a little awkward. Depending who is at the top level of the prison, or the ‘food chain’, so to speak, gets to eat first. They dine like kings & queens then the leftovers are passed down to the next level… but the thing is, they only have 2-minutes to eat before the food disappears to the next floor. This cycle continues until all food is gone or it reaches the bottom level of the prison. That’s all I know and I am more than sold on this film.
Straight away, to me, anyway, I got the total vibe of sci-fi masterpiece CUBE with much-added ickiness. It seems to carry that suffocating sense of entrapment and looks to be dystopian sci-fi at its very best.
The reviews are fantastic and they do point out that The Platform ain’t for folk who have a weak stomach. Some reviews also say NOT to watch the trailer. That’s up to you. I couldn’t help myself. If I didn’t watch the trailer then I wouldn’t be hooking you up with this fine bit of grim Spanish cinema.
The Platform hits Netflix, March 20th. It is directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia and written by David Desola & Pedro Rivero. Here’s the trailer for those of you that want to watch it.
As always, thanks for reading. I hope you enjoy the film.
