Queen Biopic Has Found Its Freddie Mercury

Rami Malek , the star of hit US hacker drama Mr Robot has been cast as Freddie Mercury in upcoming Queen biopic.

Variety have reported that Rami Malek is stepping into the shoes of one of the greatest vocalists the world has ever known –  lead vocalist of rock band Queen, Mr Freddie Mercury.

Malek recently won an Emmy for his outstanding performance as pro hacker, Elliot Anderson in Mr Robot which was well deserved if you ask me.

I am sure Malek is capable of some amazing things. I am hoping that the Brian Singer-directed movie will bring the best out of the rising star.

Borat star, Sacha Baron Cohen was previously attached to play Mercury

I must admit I was looking forward to seeing Cohen play Mercury as well. It is reported that Cohen left the project due to creative differences with band members Roger Taylor and Brian May.

I am not sure how true this is but Cohen told Howard Stern in an interview that Brian May’s and Roger Taylor’s idea of the film was to have Freddie die of aids half way through the movie. The rest of the film would be about how the band struggled to survive without him. Cohen reportedly said “no one is going to go see a movie where the lead character dies of aids halfway through the movie”

from that interview (Rollingstone.com)

The film which is to be called Bohemian Rhapsody is set to begin production early 2017. Pretty sure we are looking at an early release date of 2018 .
