This Halloween horror movies list is dedicated to the darker, more disturbing and violent side of cinema.
You can also purchase most of the movies at the end of of each description
1: BEGOTTEN
Disturbing and graphic visuals and a haunting soundtrack replace the dialogue to create one of the most horrifying and unique movie experiences.
From the director of the awesome, Shadow Of The Vampire. A very hard movie to come across these days. If you ever find yourself within reach of a copy then make sure to grab it as it could be worth some cash.
OFFICIAL PLOT (IMDb)
God disembowels himself with a straight razor. The spirit-like Mother Earth emerges, venturing into a bleak, barren landscape. Twitching and cowering, the Son Of Earth is set upon by faceless cannibals.
2: THE EYES OF MY MOTHER
One of the better horror films released in recent years. A directorial debut with heavy influences and shout-outs to some of the best horrors around. Eyes Of My Mother is an American-Portuguese release.
OFFICIAL PLOT (IMDb)
A young, lonely woman is consumed by her deepest and darkest desires after tragedy strikes her quiet country life.
3: MARTYRS
Well, it is no secret that Martyrs is my favourite horror film of all time. I am still waiting for a movie to hit me like Martyrs did. A few films have come close but none of them has had the same sense of defeat, helplessness and dread that Martyrs does so beautifully.
OFFICIAL PLOT (IMDb)
A young woman’s quest for revenge against the people who kidnapped and tormented her as a child leads her and a friend, who is also a victim of child abuse, on a terrifying journey into a living hell of depravity.
4: IN THEIR SLEEP
A horror movie that really got under my skin. A great, vicious cat&mouse type horror movie where no one is who you think they are.
The death scenes in this really stuck with me for a long time after viewing.
OFFICIAL PLOT (IMDb)
Sarah and her husband have moved to a house in the country; their son, Loic, a college student, chaffs at the isolation and a tragedy occurs. A year later, Sarah lives alone in the house; distracted by grief, she’s sent home from her hospital job at 2 AM. Police on the road warn her of burglaries in the area, then a young man, much like her son, flags her down: he surprised a burglar at his house, and he’s being chased. He is Arthur. Sarah gives him a lift, and soon a car is in pursuit. A long night ensues with flashbacks to crimes and chases; can Sarah protect Arthur as she would her own son?
5: INSIDE
Inside is another film that made me fall in love with the genre. France just seems to be in the lead when it comes to extreme cinema. Unfortunately, there has been a serious lack of hardcore titles in recent years.
There is a remake released soon. Too early to be passing any sort of judgement but the trailer didn’t carry any of the tension of the original. At least the American remake will put some people onto the original movie.
OFFICIAL PLOT (IMDb)
Four months after the death of her husband, a woman on the brink of motherhood is tormented in her home by a strange woman who wants her unborn baby.
6: BASKIN
Baskin is another gem. Made on a tiny budget, the film features one of the creepiest horror villains a horror fan could want. A hardcore piece of Turkish horror which marked the directorial debut from Can Evrenol.
Can Evrenol’s new film is another horror movie called Housewife which will be hitting our screens before the end of the year.
OFFICIAL PLOT (IMDb)
A squad of unsuspecting cops goes through a trapdoor to Hell when they stumble upon a Black Mass in an abandoned building.
7: SEVEN DAYS
Instead of calling this list “Halloween Horror Movies”, I should have called it “Halloween Torture Movies”. I do love my supernatural horror but I think the worst, terrifying kind of horror is the extreme lengths we are capable of when pushed to the edge.
OFFICIAL PLOT (IMDb)
A doctor seeks revenge by kidnapping, torturing and killing the man who raped and murdered his young daughter.
8: KIDNAPPED
I am a big fan of Home Invasion movies. Kidnapped just sounded like any other film in that genre but as a fan, I gave it a shot. I was not prepared for the madness I was about to witness.
Kidnapped is much more than your average home invasion movie. It’s full of clever twists and is much more intelligent than nearly everything in the sub-genre. When this film gets going, it will leave a mark on you forever.
OFFICIAL PLOT (IMDb)
Three hooded Eastern-European criminals burst into a home in a Madrid gated community, holding the family hostage in its own home, and forcing the father to empty his credit cards.
Secuestrados (Combo Br + Dvd) (Import Sans Langue Française)
9: THE CHASER
I have said it before, “no one really does serial killer flicks like South Korea“. Some people may put films like these into the thriller genre but I strongly believe that these types of films are horror at their finest.
If we do see an American remake of this film then there is a possibility that it could work. Appian Way (owned by DiCaprio) owns the rights to the English-language version.
OFFICIAL PLOT (IMDb)
A cash-strapped pimp and former police detective draws upon the skills of his old job to track down his missing stable of prostitutes.
10: I SAW THE DEVIL
Highly regarded as one of the most brutal serial killer flicks of all time. I Saw The Devil stars Choi Min-sik as the ruthless serial killer with a special agent closing in to get revenge for his murdered, pregnant wife.
OFFICIAL PLOT (IMDb)
A secret agent exacts revenge on a serial killer through a series of captures and releases.
