unspecifiedWe had a lot of movies last year to watch and review when covering the awesome Fantasia International Film Fest.

We’re more than glad to be in the position to be able to help spread the word again about one of the most talked about films from last year’s fest – Cash Only

Cash Only is great on so many levels – it is damn fine film-making, especially when you take into consideration just how low-budget it actually is, and what resources this team had  – the end result is a gripping and realistic, gritty as fuck, Detroit-set thriller.

The story follows Elvis Martini, a landlord of a run-down apartment complex in the cold, harsh streets of Detroit. His wife died in a fire that he started in a flawed insurance scam, and he carries the unbearable burden of her death.

He is left to raise his 9 – year – old daughter by himself and is in serious debt to just about everyone, including Albanian gangsters.

His tenants are behind on their rent, he is behind in paying for his child’s education, and is at risk of her loosing her place in her school. Things ain’t looking too good for Elvis, and it’s about to get a lot worse.

When Elvis finds a bag of cash (never touch a bag of cash in a movie…it never ends well) in one of the apartments when evicting a tenant, his temptation gets the better of him and he see’s a fix to his money problems.

The only problem is that the cash belonged to a nasty Albanian dog-fighting gang and it doesn’t take them long to figure out who stole it – they take his daughter – they want their money back  – Cash Only – they’re not fucking about!.

Cash Only is a character-driven story. Shreli gives us a great performance with a character that comes flawed, but really likeable. He is a good guy , that makes a very bad decision and he must face the consequences for his actions.

Shreli wrote the script and sent it to director Malik Bader. Bader instantly liked the script and the charcters, but also knew that it needed a bit of work. When Bader agreed to direct the feature they both got together and changed the script so they could make this film on the tight-budget they had.

The hand-held cam approach looks fantastic, it’s purposely shaky and raw , and suits the tone of the film – reminded me a lot of some of the scenes from The Wire
