When 28 Days Later was first released – Danny Boyle took everyone by surprise by reinventing the zombie genre and introducing us to – The Rage Virus – a new zombie-ish infection, that doesn’t kill, but turns you into a crazed mentalist, and all you want to do is tear every living-thing to shreds.
The infection was really believable, although not airborne, it could be passed on through saliva, sweat, or droplets of blood..if your friend or family member is infected then you got about 30 seconds to drive a machete through the middle of their head, or you’re going to be next..it’s that simple
When 28 Weeks Later arrived it got a lot of mixed reviews. I thought it was really good, but I could also understand why people didn’t like it as much as its predecessor (which is a rare thing in films anyways) overall I thought it was a worthy contender with solid direction, FX and a stellar performance from Robert Carlisle
Alex Garland (28 Days Later, Sunshine, Ex-Machina) has already penned the script for 28 Months and The Rage Virus is about re-infect the population
“About two years ago, Danny started collaborating on the potential to make Trainspotting 2, another sequel. In that conversation, an idea for 28 Months arrived. I had a sort of weird idea that popped into my head. Partly because of a trip I’d taken. I had this thought, and I suggested it to Andrew and Danny, but I also said I don’t want to work on it. I don’t really want to play a role, and Andrew said, ‘Leave it to me.’ So he’s gone off and is working on it.’
He makes a very valid point when he says that sequels get rushed. It has been 13 years since the release of 28 Days Later, so it is time for them to step back into the world that they created, and show everyone else how it’s done…I’d say they have something very special lined up for us!
Zombies are at their most popular these days so it would be foolish not to. You never know, we might even get a TV show further down the line…I would welcome that with open arms, and with the right writers and approach I think this is certainly a possibility
