3 TV Shows For You To Binge – Moviehooker

I have put together a list of 3 TV shows to binge. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I have done writing it. It feels good to be back in action.

3 TV Shows To Binge

Its been a while since I have been able to sit down and write an article. As most of you know, I have relocated to Spain. My internet has been worse than the old-school dial-up. Now I am back in full swing with, 3 tv shows for you to binge, aren’t you all excited?

I have been starved of any sort of movies or series, so to say I have gone on a bit of a binge would be an understatement. Ok, enough of the chit-chat lets get down to some bingey-business.

WACO

3 TV Shows To Binge

A six-part mini-series based on the events that took place in Texas between February 28 and April 19, 1993. A 50-day stand-off between the FBI, ATF and a cult known as The Branch Davidians.

One of the strongest casts put together for a tv show. Michael Shannon and Taylor Kitcsh and Rory Caulkin lead the cast. I have to say that Kitcsh playing cult leader David Koresh has to be one of the most memorable performances in recent years. Not to mention, Michael Shannon, is just as good as he always is. I also have a tonne of respect for Rory Culkin and the roles he chooses to play.

The series is based on two books and the information in these books (still, may have been dramatised for the screen), but the series opened my eyes and made me re-think about the shocking events that happened in Waco.

THE ALIENIST

In the 19th century, persons suffering from mental illness were thought to be alienated from their own true natures. Experts who studied them were therefore known as an alienist.

A ten-part series based on a serial killer that is brutally slaughtering young prostitute boys. The title, The Alienist was the name given to criminal psychologists back in the late 1800s. Also, this is long before serial killers were known as serial killers.

Quite harrowing and graphic at times this series ticked all of the right boxes for me. It got a little bit slow at times but there wasn’t long to wait before we got to see some impressive serial-slayings.

Another reason for us to like this series is that it is partly written by the great Cary Joji Fukunaga (Sin Nombre, Beasts Of No Nation, and original scriptwriter for the new IT, before the big-wigs, tore it to shreds to make it more suitable for a younger audience).

Nothing wrong at all with the acting, in fact, the cast is very strong. One thing that did get on my nerves a little was the accents; this was set in New York City in the late 1800s. Our lead characters sounded like they were from England. Nearly every other character sounded like they were from inner-city Dublin, Ireland.

The series is based on a novel of the same name so maybe it explains why everyone sounded like they were from everywhere else other than New York City. Still, it is still a very strong series and a must for anyone seeking a gritty serial-killer drama.

THE TERROR

This featured on one of the moviehooker lists I put together that featured some upcoming tv shows. Although not much bingeing is going to be done with The Terror as it has just released its third episode.

Produced by Ridley Scott and his production company Scott Free. The series was adapted for the screen by the writer of Invasion. If you cant remember, Invasion, it was the poor, lifeless remake of Invasion Of The Body Snatchers. Again, I tend to blame production companies who want more asses on the seats to maximise profit. They have a tendency to rape a good script and turn it into something kiddish and childish.

This series is another set in the 1800s. A team of explorers searching for the treacherous Northwest Passage are stranded on their ship in the Antartic. It’s not long before the team of skilled explorers start to get picked off one-by-one by a monstrous predator stalking their every move.

This series has real potential, the first two episodes are quite slow moving. You know its building up to be something great. It’s also great to see a series set in this freezing and unforgiving backdrop.  Although set in the 1800s, it reminds you of John Carpenter classic, The Thing.

I am really looking forward to seeing where this series takes us. When I first wrote about this show, I could’ve sworn it was based on a science fiction novel. According to the poster on IMDB, the series is based on true events..how true, I don’t know.
