YEAR 10: FrightFest review 2024

YEAR 10 is a post-apocalyptic survival horror written and directed by Ben Goodger.

Another great film I had no idea was playing at this year’s FrightFest was called Year 10.

I met with director/writer Ben Goodger outside of the Odeon on Leicester Square. He was handing out flyers for his new film, a post-apocalyptic survival horror about humans in their most dangerous, primal form.

Here’s the thing, Year 10 is 100% dialogue-free. A dialogue-free movie is a rarity, and in my own personal opinion, if you can pull off an entire movie without any dialogue and keep the viewer glued to the screen, then, folks,  we have a winner.

Set 10 years after an apocalyptic event, the film opens with these words (or something very similar) “Day 1, the living ate the dead, Year 10, the living eat the living”

The plot is straightforward and focuses on a group of survivors trying to make ends meet in this new inhumane world. Humans have resorted back to their most primal state where everything is game, and everything is food.

As well as the cannibals who hunt in groups, we also have a bunch of wild, rabid animals, also hunting in packs. Our survivors must outsmart and stay one step ahead if they are to stand a chance.

The fact that this group set up their home in a wooded wasteland makes you think. What is going on in the cities? How fast did everything fall? What blood was spilt to get them to where they are now?

Not only is Year 10 a fucking great survival horror but there is also tremendous world-building at play. And, all of this is achieved without saying a single line of dialogue.

I am engrossed in this world they have created and I would love to see more. I wouldn’t mind if it was a prequel or sequel, this is a world that deserves to be cinematically developed and I hope the lads get to do so. It’s scary to think about the production this team could achieve with budgetary restraints.
