The Wait Review: The Weight of Guilt

The Wait is the new film from writer/director F. Javier Gutierrez it is available as of October 4, and audiences across North America will be able to rent or own The Wait on Cable VOD and Digital HD, including Apple TV, Prime Video and Fandango at Home.

Eladio gets a well-paid job working in a large hunting estate deep in the rural countryside. He is to build ten hunting stands and no more. Ten stands are the maximum number so hunters have sufficient space to hunt and not come into contact with other hunters.

Eladio is approached by a wealthy man who offers him cash if he wants to build three more stands. He reluctantly accepts the pay-off and the inevitable fatal accident happens soon after

This is the start of Eladio’s descent into paranoid, rage-fueled madness. Everything he loved has been taken from him. He is overcome by guilt and is plagued by visions of the deceased throwing his mind further. As well as

The Wait is a slow-burn psychological thriller with elements of supernatural horror and a western feel. The acting is remarkable with the lead relying a lot on emotion as he tries to put the pieces together.

I should also add that The Wait is sparse of dialogue with the eerie howling wind sound design taking centre stage as a main character alongside Eladio. But this certainly adds to the atmosphere and Eladio’s descent into madness.

The Wait carries a message on how the rich and powerful can easily manipulate the common man with money and pressure. When mistakes are inevitably made, the rich and powerful walk away with their hands clean and the common man takes the fall.
