Kandisha Review: Inside Directors Return To Their Roots For New French Folklore Horror

When we hear the names Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo, our dark hearts beat with excitement. Now they’re back with a brand new French folklore horror, Kandisha

Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo are best known for their French extreme offering, Inside. The directing duo are back with, Kandisha, a new horror about a powerful female Djinn hell-bent on causing the pain and suffering to any male that crosses her path.

About Kandisha and the Moroccan folklore – wiki

Aicha Qandicha (Moroccan Arabic: عيشة قنديشة‎, romanized: ʿayša qəndiša, referred to in some works as Qandisa) is a female mythological figure in northern Moroccan folklore. One of a number of folkloric characters who are similar to jinn, but have distinct personalities, she is typically depicted as a beautiful young woman who has the legs of a hoofed animal such as a goat or camel. Although descriptions of Aicha Kandicha vary from region to region within Morocco, she is generally thought to live near water sources, and is said to use her beauty to seduce local men and then madden or kill them.

Wiki

After receiving a beating from a violent ex-boyfriend, Amélie summons the beautiful yet vengeful Kandisha. A Djinn-like woman so deadly that one look into her eyes will push you over the edge of sanity. Your mind will break and it will continue to do so until you take your own life. Amélie and her friends must figure out a way to defeat Kandisha before all of her male friends die a horribly painful death.

As a fan of Djinn movies… (check out the Dabbe movies from Turkey)

I’m always left feeling a little bit underwhelmed with recent releases. However, Kandisha was a fresh take on the sub-genre and I really enjoyed it. It was also awesome to see a female cast as the protagonists.

I wouldn’t call Kandisha an extreme movie but it does offer up some glorious gore and kills. And who doesn’t like a beautiful woman with the feet of a goat?.

Kandisha hits Shudder on July 22nd – add it to your streaming list!. As always, thanks for reading.
