IFC MIDNIGHT PICKS UP WELSH CULT REVENGE HORROR, THE FEAST

New Welsh-language cult revenge horror, The Feast was featured in a recent Moviehooker article on upcoming cult horror. Hey, it wasn’t a long list but The Feast was without a doubt my most anticipated film. I have read nothing but great reviews and I love the fact that it is filmed in the Welsh native language.

I am delighted to share with all the official press release from IFC Midnight. Horror fans! this is should be on your must-watch list!.

THE FEAST – OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE

NEW YORK, NY (April 29, 2021) – IFC Midnight announced today that they are acquiring North American rights to the Welsh-language supernatural revenge horror The Feast, directed by BAFTA-winning television director Lee Haven Jones in his feature debut. IFC Midnight will release the film Thanksgiving 2021.

Directed by Jones and written and produced by Roger Williams, The Feast stars Annes Elwy, Nia Roberts, and Julian Lewis Jones alongside Sion Alun Davies, Steffan Cennydd, Rhodri Meilir, and Lisa Palfrey. The Feast was produced through Ffilm Cymru Wales’ Cinematic scheme and was funded by S4C, Ffilm Cymru Wales, BFI (using funds from the National Lottery) and Fields Park.

The film was produced in association with Melville Media Limited with support from Great Point Media.

Rooted in the potent mythical fables of Wales, The Feast unfolds over the course of a single evening as a wealthy family gathers at their lavish home in the Welsh mountains for a dinner party, hosting a local businessman and neighbouring farmer to broker a business deal to mine the surrounding countryside. When a mysterious young woman arrives to be their waitress for the evening, the family’s beliefs and values are challenged as her quiet yet disturbing presence begins to unravel their lives – slowly, deliberately, and with the most terrifying of consequences.

A slow-burn meditation on history and tradition, greed and responsibility, identity and difference, The Feast is a contemporary morality tale that questions who is truly meant to inherit the earth, permeated with a mounting sense of dread that leads to a horrifying, blood-soaked conclusion.

Filmed in the Welsh language, The Feast made its world premiere as a Midnighters entry at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival, with Jones’ meticulous composition and Annes Elwy’s eerie central performance catching the attention of U.S. and international critics alike.

In a review for Screen International, Nikki Baughan praised her lead performance as “beguiling”, writing, “Annes Elwy is quietly mesmerizing…in a role which utilizes little dialogue, Elwy plums Cadi’s surprising depths with a quiet intensity”. Reviewing for Variety, Jessica Kiang wrote, “The chilly control of Jones’ filmmaking, enhanced by the pristine, deadened soundscape and Samuel Sim’s intriguing, atmospheric score, keeps our attention squirming on the hook,” adding, “the direction is so confident and the craft so impeccable that The Feast, though built from few ingredients, fills you up like a three-course meal”.

Arianna Bocco President of IFC Films, said, “It’s hard to shake the sense of fear and apprehension that you feel while watching The Feast, a terrifying and twisted fable that will keep you on the very edge of your seat until the shocking, grand guignol-worthy finale. We’re so excited to work with Lee on his feature debut and can’t wait to share The Feast with horror audiences everywhere.”

Writer and Producer Roger Williams added, “I’m thrilled IFC Midnight will be serving up The Feast in the USA and Canada. I’m certain audiences across North America will be entertained and horrified in equal measure by our unique Welsh film which thanks to IFC Midnight will now find the widest audience possible.”

The deal for the film was negotiated by IFC Films President Arianna Bocco and Director of Acquisitions Aijah Keith with Bankside Films representing the filmmakers.

A release date has yet to be confirmed. I will up date the article when I receive the news. As always, thanks for reading

Neill Blomkamp’s demonic – check images and behind the scenes Footage

As a massive fan of Neill Blomkamp, the best thing to come out of this God damn pandemic was the news that Neill Blomkamp has somehow managed to shoot a movie during this whole shit-storm of events. Not only that but Blomkamp’s new film is a horror film, and while his sci-fi flicks do have elements of horror in them, this is his first feature in the genre. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Blomkamp movie without some sci-fi too.

I am delighted to share with you all the official press release from IFC Midnight for Blomkamp’s new horror, Demonic. The press release includes the first released images, as well as release info and a behind the scenes look at the film.

fried barry is on his way to shudder

I remember seeing the short film Fred Barry is based on.

It was like a fucked up acid trip, full of beautiful colours, drenched in weirdness with some great sound design accompanied by an outer-worldly unique performance. I am delighted Fried Barry got the feature-film treatment and more so that it found its home with Shudder.

If you’re to watch one movie this year about a drug-addicted homeless man that gets his body hijacked and controlled by aliens and then send him on a path of mayhem through Cape Town, then it’s gotta be, Fried Barry.

Here’s the official press-release

Fried Barry follows the story of a drug-addled degenerate who, after yet another bender, gets abducted by aliens. Barry takes a backseat as his alien visitor assumes control of his body and takes it for a joyride through Cape Town. What follows is an onslaught of drugs, sex and violence as Barry’s alien tourist enters the weird and wonderful world of humankind.

The feature directorial debut from award-winning music video director Ryan Kruger

Starring newcomer Gary Green, the genre-pushing, acid-washed, sci-fi horror has been praised by critics and embraced by fans around the world.

The film, which is a feature adaptation of Kruger’s acclaimed experimental short by the same name, is produced by James C. Williamson and Kruger and executive produced by Nicolai Fuglsig (12 Strong). Williamson shares a story credit with Kruger who serves as both writer and director. The expansive cast is led by Green alongside Bianka Hartenstein, Sean Cameron Michael (Shooter, Blood Drive), Chanelle de Jager (The Widow, Outlander), Joey Cramer (Flight of the Navigator) and Jonathan Pienaar (Blood Diamond, Roots).

Fried Barry world premiered at the 2020 Cinequest Film Festival and went on to screen at celebrated festivals such as the prestigious Sitges International Film Festival, Fantasia International Film Festival, Grimmfest, and Fantaspoa International Fantastic Film Festival, where it was awarded Best Actor.

Riders of Justice: Trailer+release date for new Mads Mikkelsen revenge film

Riders of Justice is a new revenge thriller/comedy starring  Mads MikkelsenNikolaj Lie KaasAndrea Heick Gadeberg

Riders Of Justice has been on the radar now for a little under a year. I shared a small clip last year on social media and that clip didn’t even have subtitles but with Mikkelsen involved with director Anders Thomas Jensen again, I knew this was going to be something great. And, of course, Mikkelsen rocking the beard and jacket just like our beloved fallen hero, Richard in Shane Meadow’s, Dead Man’s Shoes.

Riders Of Justice tells the story of a man who lost his wife in a train crash. He travels back to Denmark to be with his only daughter, Mathilde to mourn. He is then approached by a mathematical genius that shows him that the train crash was far from an accident.

RIDERS OF JUSTICE TRAILER

So, for those of you that are not familiar with writer/director Anders Thomas Jensen, I thought I would tell you about his other quality movies you may have missed that also star Mikkelsen. Jensen & Mikkelsen are sort of like the Danish Scorsese and DiCaprio. They have worked on a few projects together. I thought I would hook you all up with the information on those movies.

THE GREEN BUTCHERS

The Green Butchers is a macabre horror-comedy about a couple of friends who decide to open their own butcher shop after taking too much shit off of their boss. When An electrician dies in the freezer of their new shop, there are two things they can do – 1, do the right thing and phone the cops…or, 2, sell the dead dude in the freezer as marinated chicken to their gullible customers. Which one do you think they choose?

This was just a tonne of fun and reminded me quite a bit of the French classic Delicatessen

ADAM’S APPLES

After The Green Butchers, there was Adam’s Apples. It is more of a dark drama than anything. It couldn’t be more different from The Green Butchers proving that they can almost tackle any genre.

The story of an ex-con neo-Nazi that is released into the care of a church before being allowed back into society. The film deals with the relationship between the neo-Nazi and the devoted church priest. Not much to it on the outside but Adam’s Apples is a deeply moving, thought-provoking and powerful film.

These three are the only ones that I know that Jensen and Mikkelsen have collaborated on. If I have missed any films, then I would be delighted if you were to let me know. I really hope that some of you ain’t heard of these flicks before. If so, you guys are in for a cinematic treat.

As always, thanks for reading.

Trailer + Poster For Irish Vampire Comedy

We always need new vampire movies in our lives. Luckily for us, we have a new vampire comedy from Ireland – The Boys From County Hell.

I have been hearing great things about The Boys From County Hell. Being from Ireland myself, I should have had this covered a long time ago. I remember seeing it at festivals that I couldn’t commit to cover this year. That was a shame but hey, better late than never, right?

The title of the movie is also the name of a Shane MacGowan song he recorded with The Pogues. I bet ya when Macgowan wrote those lyrics, he didn’t think the title would be used for a vampire movie set in the futuristic year of 2021.

Chris Baugh directed and co-wrote with Brendan Mullin the brilliant Northern Irish film Bad Day For The Cut. If you haven’t checked out Bad Day For The Cut then please do!. It is great, and it is on Netflix.

Now, back to the vampires.

Shudder has acquired the rights to Chris Baugh’s Irish vampire comedy, The Boys From County Hell. Check out the press release, trailer and poster below

Strange events unfold in Six Mile Hill – a sleepy Irish town that claims to have been travelled by the famed author Bram Stoker. When construction on a new road disrupts the alleged grave of Abhartach, a legendary Irish vampire said to have inspired Dracula. Deadly and sinister forces terrorize the work crew. Led by Francie Moffat and his son Eugene, a free-spirited young man who prefers pints to pickaxes, and they’re forced to fight to survive the night while exposing the true horror that resides in the town’s local myth.

The Boys From County Hell poster

Starring Jack Rowan (Peaky Blinders), Nigel O’Neill (The Bookshop), Louisa Harland (Derry Girls), Fra Fee (Animals, the upcoming Hawkeye series) and John Lynch (The Terror, The Banishing) and Michael Hough (the upcoming Chapelwaite series). It is written and directed by Chris Baugh (Bad Day for the Cut).

Ghost of Tsushima movie in the works

A movie adaptation of the best-selling video game Ghost of Tsushima has just been announced.

Firstly, have you played Ghost of Tsushima? I got completely hooked on it. The beautiful samurai-era Japan, galloping your horse through endless beautiful blossom trees. I said this recently on a social media post that “Ghost of Tsushima is so damn gorgeous to look at, you forget you have to behead and destroy the Mongolian army”.

As a fan of samurai movies, I was more than delighted to see that I could play the game in the Japanese language with English subtitles. There is also an option to play the game in black and white. You 100% feel like you’ve become an old-school samurai warrior from an Akira Kurosawa movie. It seems like the creators were huge samurai movies fans and Ghost of Tsushima was their love letter to the genre. The creators of the game were also recently appointed official tour guides of Tsushima Island in Japan.

John Wick director Chad Stahelski has been attached to direct

There’s no doubt Stahelski can do epic violence – we have seen it in the John Wick movies, but I am a little worried. I will still watch the fuck out of it but with Stahelski involved, will Hollywood big execs be involved too?. How authentic will it be? how many Asian and Mongolian actors will be hired for the roles? I hope I am wrong because it really deserves the authenticity that the game got so brilliantly right.

As much as I love Keanu Reeves or any other ass-kicking action star, the last thing I wanna hear is “Keanu Reeves cast as Jin”.

Only time will tell!. As soon as we hear more news I will make sure to update the article. As always, thanks for reading.

Fan Of Cult/Folk Horror? check out these two upcoming releases.

Who doesn’t love a bit of cult/folk horror? it is a sub-genre that has been on the rise but a sub-genre we certainly still don’t have enough of. I am happy to share with you two new upcoming cult releases; a movie & a series – both sound really good.

THE FEAST

The Feast recently played at SXSW prestigious Midnighters section. This new cult/folk horror is set in Wales and is filmed entirely in Welsh which is something we have never seen before.

The Feast is about a wealthy family who is throwing a huge dinner party for family and close friends. Their home help needs replaced at the last minute and, unknown to them, their new servant plans to get revenge on every single one of them.

I have read a couple of trusted reviews and both of them were great. One of them compares the tone of the film to the first half of Martyrs and then things get insanely violent (also like Martyrs)

A new name in filmmaking to watch out for, folks. The Feast is the directorial debut from Lee Haven Jones. It is written by writer/producer Roger Williams.

ARCHIVE 81

New Upcoming Cult/Horror Releases – Archive 81

This new Netflix horror series is produced and co-directed by James Wan. Written by Rebecca Sonnenshine (Vampire Diaries) & Paul Harris Bordman (Exorcism of Emily Rose).

Archive 81 is about a video archivist that starts to piece together old videotape footage. He finds himself reconstructing film footage of a dangerous cult recorded by a documentary filmmaker called Melody Pendras.

The new Netflix series will consist of 8 one-hour episodes and stars  Ariana Neal & Mamoudou Athie.

The Feast will be finding its way to distribution soon. As for Archive 81, it looks like filming just wrapped this month (03/21). I wouldn’t be expecting any sooner than 2022. I will make sure to keep you all updated on both upcoming releases.

Netflix to adapt Keanu Reeves’ ultra-violent comic BRZRKR into movie & animated series

Keanu Reeves will star in adaptations of HIS OWN new ultra-violent comic BRZRKR

Keanu Reeves has ventured into something completely new and unexpected. He has just made his writing debut with a new ultra-violent graphic novel called BRZRKR. A new 12-part series written by Keanu Reeves with New York Times bestselling co-writer Matt Kindt (Folklords, Bang!) & artist Ron Garney (Wolverine, Captain America).

Netflix did not take long to snatch up the rights to adapt BRZRKR. Keanu just cooked up a franchise and Netflix smelt what was cooking.

The first issue is was just released at the start of the month 03/03/21 by Boom Studios!.

Check out the amazing cover art for Issue 1

BRZRKR: VOLUME 1

BRZRKR” is a brutally epic saga about an immortal warrior’s 80,000-year fight through the ages. The man known only as “B” is half-mortal and half-god, cursed and compelled to violence, even at the sacrifice of his sanity. But after wandering the earth for centuries, B may have finally found a refuge — working for the U.S. government to fight the battles too violent and too dangerous for anyone else. In exchange, B will be granted the one thing he desires — the truth about his endless blood-soaked existence, and how to end it.

The Wrap

That sounds so damn good!

We all know it, don’t we? – there is no better hardcore violence than what we see in graphic novels. They know no boundaries, they can go anywhere, right to the ultimate extreme, they can do anything. Those boundaries usually come with a screen adaptation where they would tone down the content to supposedly suit the viewer “cough cough” @Preacher. With streaming services like Netflix, or Prime, we are getting to see a more truthful version of graphic novel adaptations.

We also have another ultra-violent adaptation hitting Netflix next month called Homunculus. It is based on a Manga by Ichi the Killer creator Hideo Yamamoto & described as “extreme psychological horror”. What I am trying to say is that Netflix doesn’t care about certification or ratings – they care about viewers. Violence has more than proven to bring in the numbers. People like to see carnage, death and destruction. It’s pretty simple: violence sells. Netflix knows this & will be doing the same with BRZRKR. I can not wait to see the insanity that’s in store.

As always, thanks for reading.

More info on upcoming HBO series The Last of Us

We have learnt some new information about HBO’s upcoming adaptation of Naughty Dog’s The Last Of Us.

Ok superfans…brace yourself because we are about to enter a world of change.

Here’s what Druckmann said in an interview with IGN about what we should expect from the first season of the new HBO series

“the philosophical underpinnings of the story will be similar to what Joel and Ellie go through in the 2013 game. But as far as the superficial things, like should a character wear the same plaid shirt or the same red shirt? They might or might not appear in it, that’s way less important to us than getting the core of who these people are and the core of their journey.

In the game, you have to train the player about mechanics. You have to have more violence and more spectacle to some degree than you would need on a TV show because you don’t need to train people on how to use a gun. So that’s something that’s been really different, and HBO’s been great in pushing us to move away from hardcore action and focus more on the drama of the character. Some of my favourite episodes so far have deviated greatly from the story, and I can’t wait for people to see them.”

 IGN

I am sure whatever direction they’re going to go is going to be amazing. You only have to look at who’s involved in the series to know that. I could’ve done without hearing they’re steering away from the action though.

The game itself isn’t really that action-packed anyway. Yes, it certainly has its moments but it is way more stealthy. Most of the action comes from the different characters we meet along the way. I am sure that just like in the game when action is required, we will not be disappointed.

When Pedro Pascal was cast as Joel it was met with some mixed feelings. I even saw a hashtag from people that really made me chuckle: #NotMyJoel. HA, really?. Was I expecting Pascal to get cast?. No. Did I cry like a big baby? Also no!. Yeah, to me and millions of others, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau seemed like a perfect fitting for the role of Joel but I can’t wait to see what Pascal brings to the table. The man is a terrific actor, highly sought after and has been killing it lately.

What it all boils down to was that people were (are) getting pissed off at the casting of a CGI character. The man doesn’t even exist, he is a computer-generated image lol but still…#NotMyJoel. Humans baffle me sometimes.

Stay tuned for more information on the HBO The Last of Us series on Moviehooker. We will be with the series every step of the way. As always, thanks for reading.
