Escape review: Desert Exploitation and Bikini Vengeance

Escape is the new film from indie maestro Howard J. Ford, which throws us into a battle for survival when a group of women are kidnapped to be sold as sex slaves.

I recently had the pleasure of chatting with writer/director Howard Ford about Escape and another upcoming horror/thriller he releases in October called DarkGame.

If I find myself having the privilege of getting to chat with the filmmakers, every time I sit down to write a review, I feel like I know so much more than most of the film community

Escape is a straight-up slice of indie modern exploitation cinema that offers fans of the sub-genre a film that feels like an old-school female-led revenge actioner. With indie productions, things are never going to be perfect and Escape has its flaws but the obvious passion and knowledge of the sub-genre made me forget any of the discrepancies I found with the film.

This was a tough shoot for the crew (not as tough as The Dead though) with one day having to shoot 19 pages of script. Some people might say that would be rushed but I look at that as a close and dedicated team that wakes in the morning and won’t say “cut” until the last page is complete. I have nothing but the utmost respect for that.

It never pretends to be anything else and offers us some nasty villains who’ve no sympathetic or moral thoughts for the victims. These villains, again, are reminiscent of old-school villains; the scars, and eye patches with a heavy European accent.

These vile traffickers would never stand a chance at scoring with any of these girls. So, they use a good-looking and charming guy to lure these girls into a false sense of security. Vile or charming, they are cold, and callous and will kill you without a second thought.

So, if you’re into girls in bikinis who release their animalistic vengeance on a group of absolute scumbag men in gruesome ways – check out Escape – and, gore fans! some of the villains die horrible, yet oddly satisfying deaths.
