eVil Sublet (2024) review: Home is Where The Hell Is

I was kindly sent an exclusive screener for eVill Sublet, a New York-set comedy-horror about a cheap haunted apartment, its ghosts and its new residents

eVil Sublet may sound Evil, right? well, it most definitely is but here’s the thing: the “e” stands for “east and the “vill” stands for “village”. A clever play on words that takes us to a cheap haunted rental apartment in New York’s, East Village.

Within the first minute of eVil Sublet, writer director Allan Piper reassures the viewer that this film is for mature audiences. The acting is great and the intentional horror tropes play out sometimes in a clever Scary Movie manner. eVil Sublet plays with the many problems people are faced with in the US and takes the absolute piss out of them.

The first scene had me thinking “oh, I know where this exactly going to go”. I was so wrong. Not only did this impress me but I was also sold on the zero censorship thrown in my face with in the first minute. Yeah, this is a comedy…but eVil Sublet is definitely for a hardened horror fan.

We get introduced to our fair share of interesting and hilarious characters; a gay married couple with a psychic connection to the dead, a woman who purchases a creepy haunted doll to learn to be a ventriloquist but uses the doll for more pleasurable matters. That’s only a couple of the many hilarious interactions we get throughout the runtime

It is a lot of fun, a great horror comedy which is so obviously written with a 1000 horror movies in mind but never leans into ripping off a horror film. It offers us some grotesque horror as well as the laughs, it is a weird achievement in the independent horror scene!

synopsis: Alex and Ben find their dream apartment in New York’s East Village (AKA the eVil ). Who cares if it’s cursed if the rent is cheap and it’s got an eat-in kitchen, right? But when the bad roommate situation of living with murderous ghosts becomes too much for them, they must enlist the help of friends to escape the evil of their sublet.

eVil Sublet will be available on October 1st and I can’t think of a more fun movie to spend Halloween with.
