Kyoshi Kurosawa Appreciation Post

I re-visited Pulse aka Kairo and all these years later I have realised that this is one of my all time favourite horror movies

I mean, it is not like I didn’t love Pulse to begin with but re-visiting this gem 20 year later really made me realise that horror can’t be done any better. Pulse has every element to make your blood run cold and you’ll be trembling with fear before the closing credits.

All of this is achieved on a minimum budget, with no blood or gore. As much as I love my blood and gore, it is also possible to have a masterful effective and atmospheric horror film while not leaning towards the gruesome factor. This is very much the case with Pulse.

Last night I sat with the lights out and completely found myself absorbed by the story. I was listening and seeing everything that went on and getting chills in nearly every scene. The OST is just as haunting as what we’re seeing on screen and the two go well to create something truly terrifyingly special.

If you’re not familiar with Pulse then I urge you to check it out (UK/Ireland, folks, this classic is available on Tubi for free).

The film revolves around a strange website that asks you “Do You Want To Meet A Ghost?” as soon as I wrote that sentence, I got those chills again, this is how creepy that film is.

A group of friends get pulled into this supernatural website after the suicide of a close friend.

Kyoshi Kurosawa is also widely known for his supernatural serial killer film Cure from the 90s. Fans of the recent Nicolas Cage hit Longlegs should really hunt this one down because without Cure, it is quite simple we just wouldn’t have Longlegs.

As well as those two gems I am delighted to report that Kurosawa has a two new films currently doing the festival circuit and getting astonishingly great reviews.

CHIME

Chime is a 45 minute horror film that promises a sense of lingering fear throughout. It follows a school teacher who awakens one night to a sound that fills him with dread.

CLOUD

This follows a man who resells goods online to make a profit. In doing so, he rips off those less fortunate and desperate enough to part with their items
