V/H/S BEYOND: REVIEW (2024)

V/H/S Beyond brings the franchise back to terrifying heights with each segment (all but one) throwing us into pure cosmic chaos with elements of Fire in the Sky, Arrival, Misery, Tusk and much more

V/H/S Beyond will be released on Shudder or October 4th

The 7th instalment proves that V/H/S is still one of the strongest horror franchises around today. You guys are gonna love this one. I am trying to keep this review as spoiler-free as possible

THE WRAP

The Wrap is our story that’s unfolding during the segments of footage we’re shown. It plays out like a true crime documentary and centres around the residents of a house that went missing after claims of being visited by strange beings. Two Tapes are found titled “Proof” and “Proof 2” which introduce us to our tales of cosmic and body horror

STORK

Stork follows a group of cops who have been on the hunt for a man who has been kidnapping infants. After the disappearance of the 17th child, the cops finally have a lead – the kidnapper was spotted and followed to a large abandoned house. Now, the cops must enter the house unaware of the horrors that await them.

DREAM GIRL

Two paparazzi have been tasked with following and harassing a popular celebrity. They find out where she is doing a video shoot and make their way there to try and get the money shot. But when one of them accidentally gets trapped along with the celebrity he quickly realises that she isn’t who people think. Crumbling under the pressure of being perfect, a mental circuit breaks inside of her making her a deadly threat to anyone who gets close.

LIVE AND LET DIVE

I think Live and Let Dive was my favourite from this anthology. A group of people celebrating a birthday with a skydive come into serious trouble when the plane they’re travelling on starts malfunctioning because of the presence of a UFO.

I think this is the first time (well since Will Smith bitch slapped that Alien in Independence Day) that we have seen alien terror during the day and it worked so well. This was a nasty piece of alien sci-fi horror. And there was a nice nod to M Night Shyamalan’s, Signs (you’ll see it)

FUR BABIES

It makes perfect sense that Fur Babies is co-written and co-directed by Justin Long (also directed and written by his brother Christian Long). This feels like Justin is getting a little bit of his own back for turning him into a walrus in Tusk. A group investigating foul play at a doggy daycare centre bit off more than they can chew when they plan a sneaky visit to exploit the owner. A mix of Misery and Tusk

STOWAWAY

The directorial debut by Kate Seigel (The Haunting Of Hill House)and written by Mike Flanagan. Stowaway is a tremendous piece of sci-fi horror that follows a UFO investigator camping in the Mojave desert to try and capture some UFO activity. She sees lights in the sky and follows them until she stumbles on something truly otherworldly. Think Fire in The Sky meets Arrival…only found footage.

Fans of the franchise will love V/H/S BEYOND. And yes, this is very found footage; choppy, glitchy, and intentionally out of focus and sometimes inaudible. If you find this may not be your sub-genre then I urge you to give it a shot- especially sci-fi fans. You will be rewarded.
