FrightFest 2024 review: 7 KEYS

Next up in our FrightFest coverage, things are about to get freaky in 7 Keys

7 Keys is set over the course of one night in London and follows two randomers who collide and immerse themselves in a dangerous world where part of the thrill is to get caught.

Lena is looking to escape her troubles. She has lost custody of her child and wants to do something to revisit the times when she lived a little more dangerously. We learn that Lena used to break into apartments when she had nowhere to go, but not to steal anything.

Lena then agrees to go on a blind date but the man she is meant to meet is nowhere to be seen. She then meets Daniel who seems to have been stood up as well. There’s an instant connection between the two of them and Lena’s dark soul lights up when she finds out that Daniel has kept the keys to everywhere that he has lived.

The mismatched, yet firey couple set out across the dark streets of London taking the viewer to an unseen and often dirty part of the capital. But when the sun starts to rise, the passion starts to die and Lena realises that there’s something not right with Daniel and things get very dangerous, very quick.

7 Keys marks the feature-length debut of Joy Wilkinson. This is a very good example of independent cinema done right. Our two leads Emma McDonald (Moonhaven & The Serpent Queen) and Billy Postlethwaite (SILO & The Winter King) do a fantastic job at bringing the film together both giving excellent performances. I will look forward

I can imagine it is a hard job to make a film with minimal characters and have the viewer submerged in their world for the duration of the film. I am happy to report that 7 Keys is exactly that sort of film and a very strong feature-length debut.
