Trailer + Poster For Irish Vampire Comedy

We always need new vampire movies in our lives. Luckily for us, we have a new vampire comedy from Ireland – The Boys From County Hell.

I have been hearing great things about The Boys From County Hell. Being from Ireland myself, I should have had this covered a long time ago. I remember seeing it at festivals that I couldn’t commit to cover this year. That was a shame but hey, better late than never, right?

The title of the movie is also the name of a Shane MacGowan song he recorded with The Pogues. I bet ya when Macgowan wrote those lyrics, he didn’t think the title would be used for a vampire movie set in the futuristic year of 2021.

Chris Baugh directed and co-wrote with Brendan Mullin the brilliant Northern Irish film Bad Day For The Cut. If you haven’t checked out Bad Day For The Cut then please do!. It is great, and it is on Netflix.

Now, back to the vampires.

Shudder has acquired the rights to Chris Baugh’s Irish vampire comedy, The Boys From County Hell. Check out the press release, trailer and poster below

TV Shows You May Have Missed – Part 2

As promised, we are back with a list of 4 tv shows that you may have missed. We hope you enjoy it. For Part 1 – CLICK HERE

TV Shows You Might Have Missed Part 2- Informer

Starring Paddy Considine, Nabhaan RizwanBel Powley. Informer focuses on Raza, a Londoner whose family is from Pakistan. After a night out with some mind-altering substances, Raza finds himself in a cell and done for possession with intent to supply. He was caught with only 4 ecstasy tablets which were for personal use. But the cops see an opportunity to turn him into an informer that must report terrorist activity.

Instead of facing a sentence, Raza agrees to be an informer for the police which puts himself and his entire family in grave danger.

As a big fan of Paddy Considine, I think Informer is his angriest and best role since playing Richard in Shane Meadows’ Dead Man’s Shoes. It was great to see him unleash the beast again!

Another British series. Capture focuses on a soldier called Shaun. After facing trial for the murder of an Afghan rebel while on duty, Shaun is let off the hook due to poor evidence.

On his first night back, something happens to Shaun that changes his life forever. He insists on his innocence but all evidence is showing nothing but guilt.

Capture was a superbly acted and written series. Sometimes seeing what our future can bring can be scarier than any written fiction

TV Show You Might Missed Part 2 – Future Man

OK, I will say that Future Man won’t be for everyone. I have tried it before and couldn’t get into it. I am glad I gave it another chance, it is really quite enjoyable and clever.

A gamer is recruited by two bounty hunters from another planet to help stop an apocalypse by aliens known as Biotics. If you can imagine a character like Jobe from Arrested Development then you wouldn’t be too far away from, Wolf, one of the bounty hunters.

Some really great hilarious moments in this. There is a bit of cringe humour too but in my opinion, the good outweighs the bad.

In a way, it sort of reminded me of, Community. Even though Community wasn’t always that funny, there were so much hidden Easter-eggs for a movie lover. Whoever wrote it knows their movies and they test your knowledge too and I found all of that a joy to watch.

Mr Inbetween

TV Shows You Might Have Missed Part 2 – Mr Inbetween

Mr Inbetween focuses on the day-to-day shenanigans of Ray. Part-time father, full-time hitman.

Based on the movie The Magician after a series adaptation of Scott Ryan’s film was picked up by FX. This series has everything. It is gritty, violent, heartfelt, charming and deliciously morbid.

Directed by Nash Edgerton (bro of Joel). It is written and stars Scott Ryan as Ray, the loveable, yet terrifying hitman. All that dude gotta do is smile and he can send chills down your spine. Fantastic acting and a fantastic character.

The only complaints I have about this series is that season one has only 6 episodes and each episode has a runtime of just over 20-minutes. Season 2 consists of 11-episodes which is way better but we still have the 20-minute run-time. THERE IS JUST NOT ENOUGH!

The Magician is quoted as “Chopper meets Leon” and I think that’s a great comparison. Mr Inbetween is up there with the best

That's it for this list. I hope there something in here for you to enjoy and binge-watch. As always, thanks for reading.

Secret Zoo Film Review: A lighthearted comedy that definitely hit the mark

Son Jae-Gon keeps making contributions to the comedy genre (The Man Who Saw Too Much, My Scary Girl, Villain and Widow), now with a trendy but beautiful message in it; in this Globalized World, there is still people with principles who believe we can coexist with Mother Nature.

Even when it has some cliches, you can find some originality in it.

It’s based on the webtoon “I Don’t Bully You” by Hun.

The film begins with Tae-soo, who works in a temp position in a very well-known law firm; he is a bottom feeder there, of course he wants to impress his boss and the opportunity comes as the new Dongsan Park Zoo Director; he has to revitalize the failed zoo in 3 months so that the firm can make more money by selling it to another client, the problem is… there are no animals and he has no budget.

He comes up with the idea of making animal costumes for the staff to wear and fool people, until they make enough money to get their animals back.

They are not doing well until a happy accident happens, a marketing strategy in real life that helps them go viral and start having hundreds of visitors; at times it feels like they are sponsored by certain brand of carbonated drinks, still is funny how people enjoy the show, even when sometimes they are rude.

It seems it would be easy but we need a villain, in this case the Law Firm, which will become greedy and reveal their true plans.

I think by now, we all know what will happen, but is still a really fun ride to see and laugh with the characters; I would see it’s 98% family friendly because it has a few “adult jokes” but nothing outrageous.

I enjoyed the performances, cast is fantastic in their characters, very charming; the animal costumes are incredible well made, they look realistic… I think the polar bear looks more realistic than “Black Nose”, the “real” polar bear (CGI) in the movie.

If you are looking for a fun movie to enjoy, I highly recommend Secret Zoo.

Cast includes: Ahn Jae-Hong, Kang So-ra, Park Yeong-gyu, Kim Sung-oh and Jeon Yeo-been

You can watch it in Korean with subtitles in English and English SDH or dubbed in English.

Secret Zoo it’s already available on VOD and DVD.

The Top Ten South Korean TV Shows On Netflix

We are back with another list of awesome content on Netflix. Below, in no particular order are the Top Ten Best South Korean TV Shows On Netflix

If you haven’t already, you should be checking out the amazing South Korean content on Netflix. If you’re a fan of SK films then get ready to be submerged in hours of highly-addictive crime, drama, comedy and horror. These are Moviehooker’s Top Ten Best South Korean TV Shows on Netflix. We hope you enjoy

Ok, chances are, you’ve already checked out Kingdom. But without a shadow of a doubt, it is one of the best things on Netflix

The series focuses on a rare flower that has resurrection powers which bring the dead back to life. Kingdom has a huge budget, full of jaw-dropping set pieces, gore and action. Series two was released last year with a third season coming in 2021

There is also a one-off episode titled Kingdom: Ashin Of The North that will also be released before we get season 3. The one-off special is based on the short Burning Hell and will tell the origin story of the resurrection flower.

A detective is somehow thrown 30-years into the future. While searching for clues in 1986, detective Park Gwang-ho finds himself in modern-day South Korea in 2016.

This show has a bit of everything. A highly-addictive series that ticks all the boxes making this one of the best crime shows there is.

Another K-drama that deals with the past and present. Two detectives, one from the past and one in present-day both work to bring down a serial killer.

The crimes portrayed in Signal are based on the real-life murders that inspired many South Korean films including Bong Joon-ho’s phenomenal Memories of Murder.

The Good Detective focuses on two cops; Oh Ji Hyuk, a fresh graduate from the Korean National Police University and detective Gang Do Chang who is known for his hard work, dedication to the force and conviction records.

When a man is wrongly convicted of the murder of a young woman and sentenced to death Detective Oh Ji Hyuk finds new evidence proving his innocence.

But with this newfound evidence, Detective Gang Do Chang who was the arresting officer must admit that he was wrong. This ignites a search for the truth to free the wrongly convicted man from death row. Detective Gang Do Chang isn’t ready to admit his errors and tries to cover his tracks.

This a brand new Netflix series that just arrived less than a week ago.

Stranger is more of a political drama dealing with corruption from the highest levels of power. The series focuses on prosecutor Hwang Shi Mok as he tries to bring down those responsible for a murder where a man died in a frenzied knife attack.

Our main protagonist is highly intelligent and almost void of any emotion after having an operation as a kid because he was using too much of his brain. The only problem is, he also carries the traits of a psychopath.

Season 2 just landed a couple of months ago.

Patriot: One Of The Best Series’ Amazon Prime Has To Offer…but they cancelled it!

I remember trying to start the Amazon Prime Original, Patriot sometime ago. For whatever reason, I didn’t make it past the first episode…I have no idea why! Thanks to a recent post in TV & Movie Addicts on Facebook it put Patriot back on the list and I couldn’t be happier or more upset that I have let this series slide for so long

Patriot tells the story of John Tavner, a man in his 30’s pretending to work at an industrial engineering company when really he is working as an Intelligence Officer for the United States government. He is put on a simple mission, to deliver a bag of money to help a politician in Iran fight against nuclear weapons. But things don’t go according to plan. This starts off an unpredictable and often hilarious chain of events

Another great thing about Patriot is their approach to an Original Sound Track.

As well as some classics, Patriot is drenched in beautiful folk music, played and sung by our lead character, John (Michael Dorman). The only problem is…his songwriting is a way of venting. He can’t tell anyone he is an intelligence officer but It’s all in the lyrics of the songs he writes. And he really doesn’t care. Either that or he just doesn’t notice. He gets up in singer/songwriting nights and bleeds his little folking heart out to the listeners who all seem to be lost in the melody and not realising how dark and fucked up the lyrics are.

Michael Dorman (Triangle) is such a terrific actor. You really feel his sorrow, and he doesn’t have to even open his mouth. Every mission he has been on has had a devastating effect on him. He carries this unbearable torment around with him everywhere he goes. You really just wanna give the guy a hug and tell him everything is going to be okay.

You can not mention how great this series is and not mention its amazing supporting cast including the great Kurtwood Smith (RoboCop, That 70’s Show).

Written by Steve Conrad who is responsible for some great deadpan comedies throughout the years including The Weatherman starring Nicolas Cage.

There are two seasons of Patriot for you to enjoy on Amazon Prime. I hope you enjoy and laugh as much as I did.

Turns out a certain Mr Albert Cheng (co-head of Amazon TV) cancelled this series after 2 seasons. You, sir, got this one wrong!. They could do so much more with this amazing cast and series.

As always, thanks for reading.

DRINK THE GIRLS, SUCK THE BOYS: Info on new Derry-based gay vampire mockumentary SANGE

Sange is a new gay vampire mockumentary in the style of What We Do In The Shadows and Man Bites Dog.

Sange stars Emmet Friel as the narcissistic serial killer gay vampire. It is written by Gary Gamble (me) and the camera is operated by the wonderfully wonderful Manus McManus (not his real name…but it is now). It is pretty much directed by all three of us.

The project started a few days after we all started film school. We were tasked with coming up with an idea to shoot to show that we knew how to turn on and operate a camera.

I met Emmett who is an experienced actor. Over lunch, Emmet started to tell me a little bit about himself and told me he isn’t long back from a 6-year stint in Romania.

Anyways, the very next day I woke up with this idea in my head: A gay vampire that has just returned from Romania after finding out the Count Dracula he was in love with was just Gary Oldman in makeup. Then on my way to film school, I came up with the tagline “Drink The Girls, Suck The Boys” (I am super proud of that tagline). It started to write itself.

It was overly ambitious for what was needed to be done at school. We kept brainstorming and we both had ourselves in stitches, laughing at the crazy ideas we were coming up with. I remember thinking “if we are both laughing hysterically at these ideas…maybe others would too?”

Sange is a gay vampire with a rare fang dysfunction called Fangdenfail. After realising that the Count Dracula he was in love with was just Gary Oldman in makeup, he has moved from Romania back to his hometown of Derry. Now, Sange must try to adapt and mingle with the mortals.

Now, a new experimental drug called Fangdenhard made by a vampire chemist in Limavady has hit the streets. Fangdenhard acts sort of like a vampire viagra. Vampires are advised to only take one and “whatever you do, don’t double-drop!”

Sange has no choice but to drink bottled blood which is made especially for him in once a month in Muff…the vampire capital of Ireland. But when blood supply is short, Sange must go to extreme gruesome lengths to feed and satisfy his cravings.

FANGDENHARD: I designed these and a mate 3D printed them! They look amazing, right?

We have some scenes left to shoot in Muff which is going to be a lot of fun..for obvious reasons. I live beside Muff…so, of course, I wrote that Muff is the vampire capital of Ireland. No, actually…that wrote itself.

Then we have to bring in our brand new character, Josh Feratau. Josh Feratau is a vampire from Dublin that is obsessed with Vamploitation. He isn’t happy until has half-naked girls in roller-skates carrying uzis beside him.

Then after that folks, that is the first episode complete. We still have so much more content and ideas that we can’t wait to put out there and share with you all.

Sange poster designed by Nathan McCrossan
We released the first official trailer so you can get a taste of what’s to come. If you enjoy the trailer then please help me spread the word of Sange by sharing it with like-minded people!

Guns Akimbo Trailer & Release Info

I posted about GUNS AKIMBO on the Moviehooker Facebook Page when the first official image was released. This looks like it is going to be a lot of fun…if you’re into this sort of thing. Now we have the official trailer to show you! (check the bottom of article for trailer)

Moviehooker Introduction to Deathgasm & Guns Akimbo

GUNS AKIMBO is written and directed by Jason Lei Howden. If you are not sure who he is, he’s the guy who is responsible for the insanely enjoyable Death Metal horror/comedy DEATHGASM. I actually had the pleasure of interviewing Howden when Deathgasm was first released – You Can Read The Interview Here

When I first heard of GUNS AKIMBO, I have to say I was immediately drawn to its bizarre story. It was only TODAY I learnt that this is Howden’s next film. That reason alone has got me super excited. Deathgasm was just a joy to watch, very stupid, very clever and a fantastic homage to the likes of Peter Jackson’s earlier work, Bad Taste or Brain Dead

Daniel Radcliffe plays, Miles, a mighty and fearless keyboard warrior (we all know them). When Miles wakes up in a city in some sort of online game with his hands replaced by automatic weapons he must fight his way through a series of violent criminals to save the girl he loves.

And so, so good to see Daniel Radcliffe choosing these sorts of rolls. He is really starting to leave his mark on the independent cinema scene.

Guns Akimbo has been welcomed with pretty solid reviews. Most of these state that this film will not be for everyone. It is fast, stupid and extremely violent. If you are familiar with Deathgasm and Howden’s style of writing, humour and gore, I am sure you will find loads to love about Guns Akimbo.

Guns Akimbo co-stars Natasha Liu Bordizzo and Samara Weaving.

Tired Of Superheroes? Check The Ultraviolent Antichrist Of The Genre In The Trailer For THE BOYS

So, you all know that I am not the biggest fan of superhero movies, right?. What if I told you about a new ultraviolent series about to hit Amazon that may be the antichrist or the perfect spin on the over-populated sub-genre.

This series is called The Boys and it’s brought to us by Garth Ennis, creator of Preacher. And, just like Preacher, this series was also developed for the small-screen by Seth Rogen, & Evan Goldberg. The Boys also adds Eric Kripke to the list as one of the co-creators.

Set between the years 2006-2008, The Boys is set in a world where superheroes exist among us mortal beings. But unlike nearly every superhero movie in existence, these superheroes take advantage and abuse their superpowers putting the world at risk along with countless human casualties.

A team of bad-ass ex-military is then put together. Their job: to tackle the superhero problem and save the Earth before the big-headed egotistical superhero assholes lead them all to extinction.

I seriously love that this is getting picked up by Amazon. The graphic novels had a short life-span of just a lousy fucking 6 issues. It was then cancelled because of some DC big-wigs. They hated that Ennis approached his story from an anti-superhero point of view. The comics were printed by Wildstorm, who also printed the DC comics. DC had the power to pull the plug. It was later picked up by Dynamite Entertainment and released as a collected edition.

The Boys Cast
Karl Urban, Chace Crawford, Jennifer Esposito, Dominique McElligott, Jessie T. Usher, Nathan Mitchell, Antony Starr and Jack Quaid.

The Boys premieres on Amazon July 26th

More information to follow as it is announced. As always thanks for reading. Enjoy the trailer.

New Netflix Original Series After Life Is Ricky Gervais’ Best Work To Date

Ricky Gervais is back with another Netflix original in After Life

After Life is a new comedy/drama, directed by & starring Ricky Gervais. If you’re a fan of the man then I am sure you’ll binge this entire series in just one sitting – well, I did anyway.

Gervais effortlessly puts himself in the shoes of nearly every other character that he has ever played.  He knows that this is all he has to do, and you know something? he’s fucking right too! why fix what ain’t broken?. He never has to think outside the box, he has his winning-formula and he’s sticking to it. That, and it now seems that he has streaming giants Netflix in the palm of his hands.

Another thing that Gervais does effortlessly is to have the ability to write storylines, characters and create entire worlds which all of us can connect to. Underneath the comedy and usual Gervais, antics are stories that hit us right in the feels. He’s a master at the human-side of drama and this new 6-part series has all of the above.

In After Life, Gervais plays Tony, a journalist for a free newspaper who has just lost his wife to cancer. The loss of his wife has left Tony empty, self-destructive and suicidal. Once a pleasant funny guy, he now spends his days making life miserable for his colleagues and anyone that comes into his life. Adding to the depressing reality, no one reads the newspaper anymore…especially the free ones. This makes them so desperate that any local, ridiculous story will make the headlines….like a stain on a wall that resembles Kenneth Branagh.

I found the story to have the same structure as my favourite Phillip Seymour Hoffman flick, Love Liza – a guy loses his wife and goes down a path of self-destruction as a way of grieving.

Personally, I think this is Gervais’ best work to date. It has the best elements from The Office with a lot of interesting funny characters. It was also great to see Ashley Jensen who played Maggie Jacobs in Extras in one of the leading roles.

And now that Gervais isn’t working under the strict dictatorship-like regime of the BBC, he’s allowed to let loose..and it shows in After Life. There’s no way that the BBC would let him get away with some of the scenes in After Life. I for one am glad that Netflix has given him total creative control to say and do whatever he likes.

I have no shame in admitting it, but After Life left me a  blubbering mess and if you’re a fan of his style (even if there only is one) then I am sure you will be left feeling the exact same way too.

As always, thanks for reading

ICYMI: Trailer For New Shudder Exclusive TV Series CRITTERS: A NEW BINGE

The vicious fuzzballs from space are back in their very own TV series CRITTERS: A NEW BINGE

“It appears there are loads of hairy balls descending through the air”

If you grew up watching 80s horror then I am sure you’re familiar with Critters. First released in 1986, the original starred Dee Wallace (who follows Moviehooker on Twitter) and told the hilarious story of a bunch of aliens that came to earth to feast on the folk of a small farming community in the good ole USA.

Critters spawned a chain of sequels that got even more ridiculous as they went on. Even Leonardo DiCaprio has these little fuzzballs to thank for his rise to fame as one of his very first roles was in Critters 3.

I think there were 4 movies in total, I am not 100% but I adored them back in the day. I am not sure 37-year-old me would still find them funny but nonetheless, they’re classics and in my mind, they will remain that way.

Critters gave us was the biggest, bad-ass space bounty hunter to ever be put on film. His transition from idiotic farm boy to bounty hunting Critter killing machine was the best character development and hilarious to watch. Also, when Charlie reached full-form, do you remember that glorious mullet? – it deserved its own spin-off series. I’m hoping that Charlie (played by Don Keith Opper) will reprise his role as the Critter-killer bounty hunter from outer space but it looks like he won’t be in this series. Who knows? he could get cast if we get a season 2. If they bring back the mullet…they have my attention.

Which now brings me to the series. I have to admit I was a little underwhelmed by the trailer. I am hoping it’s a case of they’re keeping the best bits for the viewers.

In Critters: A New Binge our little needle-shooting monsters return to Earth to a town called Burbank in search of a Critter abandoned and left behind. They target a group of high school kids (who I already want to die) and their families and that seems to be the main story for the series. It will be fun to see the giant Critter-ball wreak havoc once again.

As always, thanks for reading.
