Godless: The Eastfield Exorcism Review (2023)

The Aussies have done it again, Godless: The Eastfield Exorcism is another bleak offering from Down Under, this time, a psychological nightmare, disguised as a demonic possession horror

Based on shocking true events, Godless: The Eastfield Exorcism tells the story of a married couple Lara and Ron. Ron has been taking Lara to see a psychiatrist and although we don’t know when this therapy started, we know that is far from the first time that they have been there.

Lara is starting to have horrific visions again and due to her poor mental state, she has not been taking her medication. She tries to tell her husband about her medication at therapy but he refuses to listen. Ron does not believe in science and thinks that his wife, Lara has been taken over by a demonic entity when in fact she is suffering from paranoid schizophrenia & hypomania.

After this scene, we know where this film will go and it isn’t pretty. The husband is recommended an exorcist who is known for the brutal, inhumane treatment of the so-called possessed. This poor, defenceless woman is about to witness pure evil and be put through Hell all by the vicious hand of a so-called servant of God.

This one was a hard-hitter, the violence isn’t graphic but gets under your skin and burrows right in there and festers. From the beginning, it doesn’t take long to realise what is at play here. This is a different kind of horror; a horror of a broken mind, a horror about grief, loss, manipulation, torture and the delusion of faith.

Godless is also a slow burn and very independent, so I am sure this one won’t be for everyone. I can safely say that Godless: The Eastfield Exorcism is one of the best demonic possession-themed horror films I have ever seen. It makes it even more harrowing that God was nowhere to be seen when this poor woman endured suffering.
