It is very, very important, that if you’re going to name your action film Xtreme, then you better be living up to its name! and folks, yes it does.
As a huge fan of primarily asian action films, I feel my movie soul has been more than blessed with films like The Raid, Jailbreak, Headshot & The Night Comes For Us. So, when I saw the trailer to Xtreme I was so curious – this looked badass…and it ain’t Asian, it’s Spanish and set in Barcelona. It was a bit of a “wow” moment for me. Was Spain about to enter the extreme martial arts playground and play with the cinematic big dogs of Asian cinema?.
The story is a pretty straightforward one:
A hitman, presumed dead after his son is murdered comes out of hiding to protect a young drug dealer. This ignites his plans to take down the crime syndicate responsible for the death of his son.
I wouldn’t say the martial arts is up to the level of Iko Uwais or Yayan Ruhian, but, man, those are big shoes to fill. Even anyone with half the ass-kicking talent is mesmerizing to watch. This cast is more than capable.
Xtreme gets way more inventive with the kills – get ready for that nail gun!. The body count is insane. I’m not 100% but it seems like there was more bloodshed and heads popped open in Xtreme than there was in the entire two Raid movies. I may even go back and try and do a kill count. It was that impressive.
The fight choreography was beautiful. The lighting and directing were top class and the final sequence is so fuckin’ gorgeous! The acting overall was decent. I’ll bet they won’t be winning any Oscars but the beautiful ultra-violence does more than make up for that.
