Candyman sequel from producer Jordan Peele is set for 2020 release. Now, it looks like our new hook-handed killer has been cast
Remember what happened when you said his name five times into a mirror? yup, Candyman would appear, smothered in live bees, one of his hands severed, a metal hook plunged into the bloody stump. It wasn’t long before you were looking at your own insides as they spilt on the ground.
Jordan Peele, the director of Get Out is the man responsible for rebooting the franchise. He will produce the new sequel which will be directed by Nia DaCosta under his Monkeypaw Production Company I really can’t think of a better man for the job.
I wasn’t a huge fan of Get Out but I could sure appreciate it and it was so good to see a micro-budget horror film make a dent in the Hollywood film industry. Just like Get Out, Candyman is also very racially orientated. The film is still as relevant today as it was when first released back in 1992.
The original film dealt with urban legends, a sure win for horror movies of that era. The story of a black man in 1890 who falls in love with a white woman and fathered a child. He was hunted down, tortured, his arm severed and left for dead covered in live bees. That’s a pretty nasty way to go, ain’t it?. As you can imagine, when he is summoned back from the dead in present-day Chicago, he is VERY pissed.
I really loved the backdrop the original was set in, it sorted of reminded me of the run-down projects from HBO’s The Wire. I think a remake could work, I really do. We are still very early into the pre-production phase, so let’s hope we hear of more updates really soon. The screenplay will be written by Jordan Peele and Nia DaCosta.
And now Peele has found his Candyman in Black Panther’s villain, Abdul-Mateen II
The original 1992 movie was based on a story by horror maestro Clive Barker. It was adapted for the screen and directed by Bernard Rose. It also spawned 2 sequels, Candyman: Farewell To The Flesh (1995) & Candyman 3: Day Of The Dead (1999).
According to comingsoon.net Tony Todd has been confirmed for a role in the new Candyman reboot. As of this time, we are still uncertain of what role he is going to play but it looks like it’s going to be a role that carries great significance to the plot.
In an interview with CinemaBlend, Tony Todd had this to say about his upcoming role in Candyman…
“Out of the blue, I got a phone call from Jordan Peele. We’re still waiting for the contract, but the way he explained it to me was that it’s gonna be applause-worthy moments. That’s his words. No matter what happens with that, it’s gonna just put renewed attention on the original.”
