INVOKING YELL (2024): Blair Witch meets Lords Of Chaos

I had the pleasure of checking out a new Chilean found footage horror called Invoking Yell

Invoking Yell tells the story of 2 members (and a possible third) of a new black metal band called Invoking Yell. Well, if you think black metal ain’t heavy enough, they describe their music as “depressive suicidal black metal” – is that heavy enough for you?

Currently a two-piece band, they are on the hunt for their third member to complete their E.P but before any one is allowed into Invoking Yell…they have to prove their worth…their dark worth.

They venture into a haunted wood where the lost souls of dead children fill the forest with the agonising screams of the afterlife. Their mission is to use mics to record the painful screams of dead children and the use the real paranormal recordings as part of their new sick EP.

But these paranormal recordings may not be enough, or they may not be the entire reason that they have chosen this forest of the dead to complete their E.P

Setting Invoking Yell in the 90s is a clever time era to set a found footage horror. Not only does this eradicate any modern form of technology to be used when the sh*t hits the fan. It also puts us right in the black metal scene.

Invoking Yell won’t be for everyone, and that is absolutely fine. The found footage sub-genre is an acquired taste and this one does goes full VHS found footage. It’s jumpy, it’s glitchy, it is exactly how you’d imagine footage to look like when faced with the horrors that await them.

If you’re into films like The Blair Witch Project with the mayhem of Lord of Chaos then I think you’ll love Invoking Yell. It plays out way different than I imagined with the end result taking us to places you’d never expect.

A fantastic entry into the found footage genre. Well done to Patricio Valladares and everyone involved. I will look forward to future releases from Valladares and the team.
