The Rise Of Irish Horror: 3 New Horrors

We are witnessing the birth and rise of Irish horror and it is a beautiful thing to see.

Yes, of course, we have horror films from Ireland, and when we do horror, we do it damn well. But, now, not only are we beginning to see an increase in horror productions, it seems we’re resurrecting a part of our dead heritage, the Irish language.

I never got the option to learn Irish (weird, right?). It was either French or nothing but I went to a protestant school so that was expected. However, years later I found out that many of my Catholic buddies never had the option either. It was kept from us for so long and that is an unforgivable sin.

So, I hope that directors John and Aisling know how important their movies are in the rebirth and cinematic revolution of the Irish language.

We have three new titles doing the rounds and I want to tell you about them. Also, it would be rude of me not to include notable mentions of older Irish horror films that may have slipped past your eyes.

THE GHOST

Written and directed by John Farrelly, The Ghost is the first Irish language horror movie that follows a daughter and father as they take on a caretaking job in a secluded Georgian mansion. With the harsh weather approaching, isolation slowly sets in along with realising that they’re not as alone as they thought they were.

Moviehooker is delighted to announce that we will be showing a pre-release screening of The Ghost at the Ritz Bar, Spencer Road, Derry on the 30th of October.

HAUNTED ULSTER LIVE

Haunted Ulster Live is a new mockumentary-style film that follows a team of paranormal researchers, followed by a film crew trying to catch ghostly sightings.

The reviews have been awesome and Haunted Ulster Live is a great homage to classic 90’s Ghost Watch

FREWAKA

Frewaka recently dropped onto my radar as it was showing at the Belfast International Film Festival. This one is another folk horror and deals with many social issues that have been plaguing Ireland for decades….maybe even centuries.

These issues are all presented via a single story of loss that takes us through decades of grief, abuse and the paranormal.

Frewaka translates to “roots”. More information to come on this one when I get my hands on it.
