Booger review: Body Horror in the form of grief

Booger is the new debut feature from writer/director Mary Dauterman and offers us another form of body horror

When we think of body horror, movies like The Fly always come to mind. The body horror begins with some sort of nasty, infectious bite that slowly turns our protagonist into something hideous. Mary Dauterman takes a slice of this premise and adds multiple cinematic layers to give us Booger.

When Anna suddenly loses her best friend, Izzy, her world falls apart and she doesn’t know how to deal with it. With her head still full of doubt and disbelief, she mistakenly lets her cat, out of her apartment window, but not before the little Booger bit her.

But Booger is way more than just a cat. He is a bond, he is a thousand cherished memories and this little dude is the only thing that she has left of her friend.

Anna sets out to plaster her neighbourhood full of posters of her missing feline friend. But things start to get strange. She starts to undergo a strange transformation. Her bite is starting to Brundle-fy and all symptoms point to her going full-feline.

Part comedy, part tragedy, part drama, part arthouse. Booger is a beautiful film about not being able to process emotion and deal with loss. When the pieces fall into place, it hits hard. It is a wonderfully constructed film with standout performances from Grace Glowicki and the supporting cast.

The only criticism I would give Booger and it ain’t much. I don’t think I will want to hear that song “I like Pina-Coladas” for the next ten years.
