Are We Finally Getting A New 28 Days/Weeks Later Movie? It Looks Like it.

At this point, it just seems that we are getting teased. A sequel to Danny Boyle’s zombie genre twister 28 Days Later has been in the works for what seems Like 28 Lifetimes

I don’t want to be getting anyone excited but it seems that we are closer than ever to a new 28 Days/Weeks Later movie. In fact, a script has been completed by none other than Alex Garland himself, and on top of the great news, Danny Boyle is showing interest in directing it. Sure, I might as well throw this out there too…Cillian Murphy is up for reprising his role as Jim. WHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAATTTT!?

Here’s What Danny Boyle Has Said About Directing Garland’s New Script (From NME)

I’d be very tempted, It feels like a very good time actually. It’s funny, I hadn’t thought about it until you just said it, and I remembered ‘Bang, this script!’ which is again set in England, very much about England. Anyway, we’ll see… who knows?”

And Cillian Had This To Say About Returning as Jim After 20 Years (Den of Geek)

“Every time I do bump into Danny or Alex I always mention it, Because I showed it to my kids recently, some Halloween about four or five years ago, and they loved it. It really stands up, which is amazing for a film that’s 20 years old. So yeah, I love the idea and it’s very appealing to me.

As we all know, the sequel was just set in the same universe, we just got different characters caught fighting for survival. We never really get to see what happened to Jim and Co after the events of the first film. Jim’s transformation from an everyday bicycle courier to a machete-wielding zombie killer (yes, they are zombies (“Whatever technical discrepancies may or may not exist, they’re pretty much zombie” – Garland )was such great character development and his character needs to be further explored. It is exciting to think about the person he became after decades of dealing with the Rage Virus. Hell has been home for such a long time, that’s gotta take a serious toll on you.

It ain’t fair to mention 28 Days Later and not talk about the great sequel we got. Yeah, it didn’t quite hit the benchmark of the 1st one…but it came damn close. Also, it had one of the most intense and chaotic opening scenes in any horror movie. It was a masterful piece of cinematic rage! It turns out that 28 Weeks Later fell short at the Box Office by $20m so any further instalments couldn’t move forward. There was that and also those who owned the rights were all fighting with other. Until they started to get along, we would not be seeing any more movies.

Let’s hope this news is 100 % confirmed real soon. I think it might be a good time for Murphy now that Peaky Blinders has finished. So, fingers crossed. If we have the characters from the first 28 Days, but the story follows what happened at the end of the 2nd part (the Rage Virus hits Europe)

As well as a new movie, do you want to know what I would like? A mini-series focusing on the start of the infection. Day 1 of infection. We get to see an unsuspected and unprepared London fall to the Rage Virus.. 28 Episodes, the last episode follows survivors in the hospital where Jim wakes up.
