Deadline has reported that a follow up to Leigh Whannell’s epic sci-fi, Upgrade will be getting a sequel…but in the form of a new Blumhouse TV series
As a huge fan of Upgrade, this is the news I have been waiting for. It is amazing that they have got the content for a sequel but WAY better knowing that we have hours of Upgrade fun to be looking forward to.
Upgrade starred Logan Marshall-Green (please check out Quarry if you haven’t already). After an accident leaves him paralysed, an experimental AI chip is planted. This new chip not only gives him his body back but he has now become an enhanced killing machine.
I loved this because there was no holding back. We got treated to some fantastic practical effects as well as some modern digital wizardry. The end result had genre lovers flooding forums with nothing but love for Wahnnell’s directorial debut. Since then, Upgrade has become a well-loved horror/sci-fi genre film with worldwide acclaim.
Whannell first appeared on our screens in 2004 in Saw. Co-written by Whannell and James Wan, the Saw franchise has now, to this date spawned countless sequels with no (as much as they say “the final Saw”) sign of it ever stopping. It doesn’t matter if you’re a fan or not, the Saw movies have had some screen time. I can only imagine, as a writer, it certainly is one of the highest compliments to get…even if it has gotten a bit ridiculous.

Whannell is onboard to direct the new Upgrade series. I am not sure if other directors will be stepping in for different episodes. I am certain that Blumhouse will let Whannell shape this series any way he wants. He is pretty much a secret weapon Blumhouse with his recent reimagining of The Invisible Man grossing a staggering $122m worldwide. Upgrade will mark the beginning of the director/writer’s 10-year deal with Blumhouse. Such greatness awaits us all!
More information to follow as news is announced. As always, thanks for reading.
