V/H/S BEYOND: Everything you need to know!

Earlier in the month we reported on V/H/S BEYOND, the 7th instalment in the hugely popular horror franchise. Check out more deliciously gruesome info below.

One of the awesome things about Moviehooker is that when I find out about a new film that’s coming out and then I just get all the juicy press on that movie in my inbox. So, thanks to Shudder and AMC, I feel I am a in position now to tell you all more about what to expect from V/H/S BEYOND

The next chapter in horror and found footage madness will feature seven short horror films, all from different directors and we have some interesting directing choices. Here are the films and the filmmakers involved in V/H/S BEYOND

  • Jay Cheel, Director of the Wrap
  • Jordan Downey, Director of STORK
  • Virat Pal, Director of DREAM GIRL
  • Justin Martinez, Director of LIVE AND LET DIVE
  • Christian Long, Co-Director of FUR BABIES
  • Justin Long, Co-Director of FUR BABIES
  • Kate Siegel, Director of STOWAWAY

Also, I can confirm that we’re looking at the best instalment in the entire franchise. I’ve got some horror content creator friends who got to check it out at Fantastic Fest and every one of them said it was the best and strongest yet. I’ve got high hopes for V/H/S BEYOND.

Here’s what other critics are saying:

“…the strongest overall collection of tales in “V/H/S” history”

– Ryan Scott, SlashFilm

“…an absolutely fantastic ride through science fiction hell.”

– Mary Beth McAndrews, Dread Central

“…one of the best films in the series.”

– Matthew Jackson, The A.V. Club

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENTS

Jay Cheel, Director of the Wrap

While filming Cursed Films II for Shudder, I received an anonymous email from someone who claimed to have evidence of an alien abduction. Much of my documentary work explores the tension between the real and the unreal, and this story scratched that itch. Real or not, I couldn’t help but follow this thread.

Jordan Downey, Director of STORK

Stork is first and foremost a creation of Oleg Vdovenko, an artist who has inspired me for years with his grimy and flashlight-lit worlds filled with freaks and monsters. To bring his story to life, dialled to an extreme, with the pulse of a video game, has been nothing short of a dream.

Virat Pal, Director of DREAM GIRL

Dream Girl follows two Indian paparazzi tasked with sneaking into Bollywood superstar Tara’s trailer to capture exclusive behind-the-scenes footage. However, this simple task snowballs into horrifying consequences no one could’ve imagined beyond their wildest dreams.

Being the first ever V/H/S segment from India, my aim was to take the audiences on a fun and thrilling ride while showcasing the vibrant culture and energy of India; along with giving the audience a glimpse of what it feels like to be on a Bollywood film set.

On a thematic level, the segment explores the growing concerns over AI in our lives and Tara’s character embodies these fears. The segment also shines a light on the invasive and voyeuristic nature of paparazzi culture and their willingness to go to any lengths to get the job done.

Justin Martinez, Director of LIVE AND LET DIVE

It’s a special moment for me to have been a part of the V/H/S franchise, from its original feature in 2012 to making my solo directorial debut with V/H/S/Beyond. The concept for “Live and Let Dive” was a perfect fit for a found footage storyline, which I’ve always wanted to create.

It leverages the skydivers’ POV cameras and the natural fear of jumping from an airplane at 10,000 feet. I encountered numerous logistical and technical challenges that pushed my skills as both a director and a VFX artist, especially with the addition of an extraterrestrial twist that I embraced.

I had a fantastic team and received wonderful support from the producers and the studio, for which I am very thankful. I’m thrilled to share this experience and hope viewers find as much excitement in watching it as I did in bringing it to life.

Christian Long, Co-Director of FUR BABIES

Having no experience in the horror genre, the opportunity to write and direct a segment in the iconic V/H/S franchise was thrilling for me. “Fur Babies” is about a cheerful woman named Becky who runs a doggy daycare business out of her home.

Everyone knows someone like Becky, someone who claims to like dogs more than people. This film examines that type of person, and what would happen if that preference was pushed to the extreme.

I’m so grateful to the entire cast and crew for helping me realize this vision and for giving me the freedom to experiment in a brand-new world.

Justin Long, Co-Director of FUR BABIES

The horror genre is such an exciting space for me, creatively, because it allows you to take wild swings with your imagination – and, specifically in the VHS world, those swings are encouraged to be as wild as possible.

As an audience member, I’ve been drawn to monster movies since I was a kid spending way too much time studying the VHS box covers of those great 80s horror movies at my beloved video store (RIP). “Fur Babies” also gave me an opportunity to further explore the wonderful balance between horror and comedy; a relationship that has always attracted me as an actor – and one that’s been mastered by some of my favourite filmmakers – like Sam Raimi, Zach Cregger, Ari Aster and Jordan Peele.

It made it less daunting to take this wild creature-feature swing with my brother, Christian, whose sense of humour and storytelling I have such confidence and trust in – and when either of us would worry or wonder “Is this too much? Is it going too far” we’d look to our supportive, knowledgeable producer, Josh Goldbloom, and he’d say “No. I don’t think it’s far enough!” As a fan of weird, wild horror, that’s a sandbox that I’m always happy to play in.

Kate Siegel, Director of STOWAWAY

I’m grateful to have VHS be my directorial debut; a franchise of which I’ve been a longtime fan. Stowaway lives at the intersection of Contact and The Fly, and alongside my DP Michael Fimognari, I was able to take some incredible creative risks thanks to the support of the Shudder and VHS teams.
