A new spin-off of The Boys is now in the works. Vought Rising will take us back to the years of Soldier Boy and Stormfront and the rise of Vought.
With the huge success of The Boys, it is a no-brainer that we would be getting more. First, we got Gen V, a spin-off about a university full of supes and potential future members of The Seven. And you know something? It works – it worked well. Now we have the confirmed Vought Rising, the prequel spin-off that will take us back to the early days of Vought.
I was surprised that Gen V worked so well. I was worried we would have another Walking Dead-type spin-off series (featuring primarily teens with terrible cringe-writing). But, not only did it work but it also added some serious tension to season 4. There’s no doubt that these writers are comfortable in this world that Garth Ennis created.
However, I do have some worries about Vought Rising. Let me try to explain.
Ennis created this wonderful world to mock Marvel and DC and how their watered-down, kiddy-friendly superhero multi-verse became an elite marketing machine. Is The Boys starting to become the very thing they’re takin’ the piss out of? I would hate to think that but it is impossible for me not to have my doubts.
Of course, I want to see the origin story of Solider Boy and Stormfront but where do we draw the line? I know I will be tuning in but how many more spin-offs will we get before the writing becomes predictable and shallow and the series becomes the very thing it’s laughing in the face of.
