Mickey 17: Trailer & info for Bong Joon-ho’s new sci-fi

It has been a long time coming but I am happy to finally share with you the trailer for Bong Joon ho’s new sci-fi Mickey 17

With an astonishing cast featuring Robert Pattinson, Toni Collette, Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie and Mark Ruffalo, Mickey 17 is already proving that it has been worth the wait.

Robert Pattinson plays Mickey, an expendable, unfortunate and possibly desperate man who signs up for a scientific experiment, and the poor dude forgot to read the small print. He is to be cloned (or printed), to carry out certain tasks but, here’s the thing, if he dies, he is just reborn but all of his memories from his past life remain intact. Every time there’s a mission that seems a little too dangerous for the crew, they call in poor Mickey who inevitably dies a horrible death each time.

What I wasn’t expecting was the comedy side of the trailer. Usually, I like my cosmic horror without any laughs but this still looks wonderful. If you’re familiar with Joon-ho’s writing style then you will know of the natural flow of his comedy – it never seems obvious, pushed or predictable.

Another aspect of the trailer that I loved was the introduction of the Lovecraftian seal in the Arctic-like snow planet,  Niflheim. Yes, Bong Joon-ho is not only taking us to the nothingness void of space, but he’s also giving us what seems like an ice-cold serving of alien snow horror.

Mickey 17 is based on the book Mickey 7 by Edward Ashton. After a stint in development hell, we will finally see a release in January 2025. Check out the trailer below.
