Bloody Hell was released in 2020 and its been a few years since I have seen it but, oh boy, this one is a lot of bloody fun and even better with my second viewing
Rex is an accidental hero who spends his days talking to an imaginary version of himself. His instant fame happened when he took the law into his own hands, unleashed his inner John Wick and killed a load of bank robbers during a bank heist. But, unfortunately there were casualties, a woman lost her life caught in the crossfire and poor Rex and his other self is thrown in prison.
Behind bars, Rex dreams of better times and fate is pushing his towards Finland to start a new life when he is released. When he finally arrives, Rex soon realises that he was better off rotting behind the prison bars. He is kidnapped and chained in the basement of a house, destined to be on the menu of a family of cannibals who want to eat him piece by piece.
The lead performance by Ben O’Toole is bloody outstanding. The banter and battles between the two Rex’s is wonderfully done. We’re aware that this is a mental illness but we see just how dangerously different the two personalities are. One is a man of reason, the other a battle-scarred vet with PTSD.
One of the most original horrors of the last ten years. A perfect blend of madness and dark comedy with the comedy feeling perfectly natural and not forced like many other films in the sub-genre.
If you’re a fan of action, comedy and cannibals and you haven’t checked out Bloody Hell then you should really move it to the top off your watchlist just in time for Halloween.
